WE ARE ABLED DIFFERENTLY NOT CURSED

The belief that disability is caused by witchcraft is a common misconception that has been present throughout history in many cultures. This belief holds that disabilities, such as physical impairments or intellectual difficulties, are the result of curses or spells cast by witches or sacrifices to acquire wealth "kuwekwa kiti" as its popular known in the Coastal Region. One of the reasons for this misconception is that people have long sought to find explanations for things that they don't understand. Many cultures have had limited knowledge about the causes of disabilities, and so people turned to supernatural explanations as a way of making sense of these conditions. Additionally, in some cultures, there has been a social stigma attached to disabilities. The belief that they are caused by witchcraft can be used to further marginalize and discriminate against people with disabilities.

Another reason is that some societies that still use traditional beliefs and practices, disability is viewed as punishment by  their ancestors for something they have done. It's important to note that the idea that disability is caused by witchcraft is not only untrue, but it can also be incredibly harmful to people with disabilities and their families as it leads to discrimination and mistreatment, and it can also perpetuate negative stereotypes .It is always important to understand the root causes of a particular problem and not to jump into conclusions without proper understanding. This misconception has lead to many parents hiding their kids at home for fear of what  people will say and how they will be percieved in the community. This in turn  makes the child feel left out and unloved. They might not be able to ask the questions or say it loud bt at the back of their minds they ask why they are hidden from people cause they also have feelings just like any other person.

Another harmful aspect of the belief that disability is caused by witchcraft is that it can discourage people from seeking medical or therapeutic treatment for their conditions. Instead, they may be directed to seek help from traditional healers or exorcists, who may not have the knowledge or skills to effectively address the underlying condition. This can delay or prevent people from getting the care and support they need, which can have serious consequences for their health.Furthermore, the belief that disability is caused by witchcraft can lead to violence and abuse against people with disabilities, particularly women and children, who are often seen as the most vulnerable and easiest targets.

To combat this misconception, it's important for society to increase awareness and understanding about the true causes of disabilities, and to dispel myths and stereotypes about people with disabilities. This can be achieved through education, media campaigns, and other forms of public outreach. Additionally, providing accessible and inclusive services, such as health care, education, and vocational training, can help people with disabilities to live full and productive lives.Another key way of addressing this is by promoting rights and empowerment of people with disabilities and giving them a platform to share their stories and challenges, it would go a long way in reducing stigmatization. It is also important for governments and other organizations to take a strong stance against discrimination and abuse of people with disabilities, and to take action to ensure that people with disabilities are able to enjoy their human rights on an equal basis with others.Another way to challenge this misconception is to focus on representation. People with disabilities are underrepresented in media, politics and society in general, and they are often portrayed in a negative light or not at all. Increasing the representation of people with disabilities in all aspects of society can help to break down stereotypes and change societal attitudes. The government should also invest in research and development of assistive technology and making them accessible to people with disabilities. This technology can greatly improve the quality of life of individuals with disabilities.

It's also important to understand that individuals with disabilities should be loved and  treated with dignity and respect, and society should work towards creating inclusive environments where people with disabilities can thrive.
